Youth Leading the World - St Joseph’s Aberdeen

Youth Leading the World - the beginning of a new journey for 11 students from St Joseph’s Aberdeen.

In 2013, 11 students from St Joseph’s Aberdeen school attended the Muswellbrook Youth Leading the World Congress. Little did they realise that what seemed a good excuse for 3 days off school would be the start of an inspirational journey.

The YLTW congress helped the group identify their specific concerns regarding environmental issues and sustainability in our community, and it sparked some big ideas for taking action.

Following YLTW they kept the spark alive by forming a group – Youth Leading the World Muswellbrook. In 2014, with support from the Stepping Stones project, the group ran a community day at Karoola Wetland. It was a great success with 3 tonnes of weeds removed and CVA staff on-hand to educate volunteers in weed identification and control methods. With support from Muswellbrook Shire Council, they attended the YLTW National Summit where they met other Youth Leaders and were inspired by CEO and Founder of OzGREEN, Sue Lennox.
The group returned to Muswellbrook with Big Plans for their Big Ideas, which they presented at a community forum attended by Councillor Christine Phelps, and Mayor Martin Rush. Over the next 12 months they will be working to transform these big ideas into action in the community. Look out for the 30 Day Instagram EcoChallenge! Recycling facilities in fast food venues in town! SUSTAINATHON 2014 – an event to engage the community in reducing waste to landfill!
Having completed facilitator training, the group will support YLTW 2014 as congress leaders, and no doubt will be an inspiration to this year’s participants.
So watch this space. Youth Leading the World Muswellbrook have some great ideas to make change in our community and beyond.
YLTW is an annual event that engages and supports young people to take environmental and sustainable action in their local communities.
